Message:
WHAT IS YOUR ASSIGNMENT?
Did you know that you have an assignment? It is not a
homework assignment or something that needs to be turned in to the church.
Rather, God has given you an assignment to accomplish something for God.
We are told about our assignment in Ephesians 2:10 where it says: “For we
are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God
prepared in advance for us to do.” This means that God created you to
accomplish your assignment. God has something for you to do that has been
prepared for you just as you are prepared for it. The word “works” in this
verse means effort, occupation, act or work. So, God has prepared
something awesome for you to work at or do.
Some believers get anxious when they find out that they are to do good
works. They get anxious because they don’t want to miss what they are
supposed to accomplish and perhaps are unsure that what they are doing is
the “it” that they are created for. I always tell people not to worry.
This same verse tells us that you are God’s workmanship and have been
created by God for your assignment. So, the question you should ask in
order to find your assignment is not “What is my assignment?” but rather,
“What do I like to do?” Ask yourself questions like “What is my passion?”
“What am I good at?” These types of questions will start to zero you in to
your target. Then, just do what you can with all of your heart. Do it as
an assignment from God.
This reminds me of a story of a very ordinary Sunday School teacher. He
was so burdened for a student in his class that he decided to go visit him
at his job. At a shoe store, Edward Kimball told this young man of
Christ’s love. The young man made a decision for Christ then and there in
the shoe stockroom. This young man was Dwight Moody who later became one
of the greatest evangelists in America. He founded the Moody Bible
Institute in Chicago, Illinois. Just think if this ordinary Sunday School
teacher had not accomplished his assignment. The greatest thing he ever
did was to have a burden for this one young man and lead him to Christ.
You might think that what you are doing is very ordinary. Yet, when we do
what we do as an assignment, God enters the picture. Then, God can lead us
at work, school, or at home to accomplish “good works” for eternity.
